  337. PLANT OUT SPRING BEDDING

Wallflowers get their name from their habit of growing near  stone walls.

Erysimum cheiri are shortlived evergreen perennials or biennials often grown as
    spring bedding.

You can buy them as plug plants now and get them in the ground to flower early next year.
This is a fun activity to do with children or grandchildren. All you need is
a well-weeded flower bed in a sunny spot, gardening gloves,
    and a trowel.

Dig a hole so that the base of the plant is level with the soil.

Pop in your young wallflower, firm the earth around it and water well.
    Repeat, leaving 20cm between plants.

They can grow to up to 50cm high depending on the variety
and come in a range of bright colours. E. ‘Fireglow’ is a dazzling red and orange variety; E.
‘Bowles Mauve’ is light purple, while E.

‘Sunset Primrose’ is a fragrant lemon yellow.

Erysimum cheiri (pictured) are shortlived evergreen perennials or biennials often grown as spring bedding

This is also the time to plant plugs of Sweet Williams (Dianthus barbatus).
These are also biennials or short-lived perennials which grow to between 40 to 60cm with clusters of carnation-like flowers from February to June in colours from
white to deep pink, often in a combination of
two tones. They prefer well-drained, alkaline to neutral soil
    in full sun.

    POTATOES NEED LIFTING AND STORING

Potatoes are ready to lift when the foliage starts to die down

Potatoes are ready to lift when the foliage starts to die down. Remove leaves with signs of
blight. Take care not to damage tubers, lift and leave them
    on the ground to dry.

Place in a paper bag and keep them in the dark, so they do not sprout.
Check regularly, and dump any looking diseased.

Hazelnuts are ready when the husks turn yellow. Store in a
dry room in a net bag. Once they are fully dry, remove the husks.

Walnuts (Juglans regia) have a fibrous casing, which should be removed
using gloves, before drying in a cool oven at 40C – then keep them
    in a dry place.

    PLANT OF THE WEEK

    ACTEA SIMPLEX (BRUNETTE)

Actea simplex or baneberry is a herbaceous
perennial, which grows well in moist soil in dappled shade.

In autumn, it produces spikes of tiny fragrant white
flowers which are purple in bud. These are a good source of late
nectar for pollinating insects and are followed by poisonous berries.

Actea simplex ‘Brunette’ is a cultivar that has been given the Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit.
Its deep purplish brown foliage contrasts well with its ghostly white blooms.

    READER’S QUESTION

Can you recommend good daffodils for pots?

    Serena Dalton, Knutsford.

Dwarf narcissi daffodils are ideal for pots and make a
cheerful welcome if you place them by your front door

Dwarf narcissi are ideal for pots and make a cheerful welcome if you place them by
your front door. N. Tête-à-tête is a classic miniature daff with golden yellow blooms.
    N. ‘Jetfire’ has a windswept appearance.

    N. ‘More and More’ is a dainty new dwarf variety that is long flowering.
Petticoat daffodils are also worth showing off in pots, with
their bell-like blooms. Try N. ‘White Petticoat’ or N.
‘Mary Poppins’ with magical creamy white flowers.

  338. An invitation to lunch at Caviar Kaspia was, once upon a time, an offer you
simply didn’t refuse. Providing, of course, that the
bill was on someone else. Because caviar, smeared on blinis or piled high on baked potatoes, sure didn’t come cheap.
There may have been other things on the menu, but no one paid them much heed.
This was all about lashings of the black stuff.

Caviar Kaspia’s signature baked potato and caviar: ‘there are
few better dishes on earth…only the price, at just under £150, is ridiculous’

Caviar Kaspia popped her final tin about two decades back.
And that site, hidden down a smart Mayfair
mews, was taken over by Gavin Rankin (who used to be the boss),
and transformed into the brilliant Bellamy’s.
It prospers to this day. Kaspia, on the other hand, went quiet.

Until last year, when she reopened as a members’ club in another Mayfair backstreet.
But a £2,000 a year membership fee proved hard to swallow, meaning the doors were opened to
    the great unwashed.

Which is how we find ourselves sitting in a rather handsome – albeit near
empty – dining room, lusciously lavish, under the stern gaze of a stern painting
of a very stern man. The soft, crepuscular gloom is broken up
by the glare of table lamps, indecorously bright, while a loud soundtrack
of indolent, indeterminate beats throbs in the background.

The whole place is scented with gilded ennui.

Our fellow diners are two young South Korean women of pale, luminescent beauty, clad in diaphanous couture.
They don’t speak, rather communicate entirely via camera
phone. Pose, click, check, filter, post. Immaculate waiters hover
    in the shadows.

We sip ice-cold vodka, and eat a £77 caviar and smoked-salmon Kaspia croque monsieur that tastes
far better than it ought to. Next door, a large table fills with a glut of the noisily, glossily confident.

We’re looked after by a wonderful French lady of such
effervescent charm and charisma that had she burst into an impromptu performance of ‘Willkommen’, we would have barely blinked.
Baked potatoes, skin as crisp as parchment, insides whipped savagely hard with butter and sour
cream, are a study in tuber art. A cool jet-black splodge of
oscietra caviar, gently saline, raises them to the sublime.

Only the price, at just under £150 each, is ridiculous. But
there are few better dishes on earth. I’d eat this every
day if I could. But I can’t. Obviously. That’s the problem with caviar.
    One taste is never enough.

How Celine Dion fought Stiff Person Syndrome every day to be fit to open the Olympics

Dion burst out laughing and said ‘never mind!’ before suggesting she ask the question in a strong French accent.

After this Siri responded: ‘Okay, here is ‘Hymne à l’amour by Céline Dion.’

Dion looked shocked before smiling and giving the thumbs up.

In July Dion made a musical comeback with the track at the 2024 Paris Olympic Opening Ceremony amid her battle with incurable condition, stiff-person syndrome.

28 years after making her Olympic debut in 1996 at Atlanta’s stadium, Celine proved she’s still got it following her emotional act in the French city at the Eiffel Tower.

And after bringing fans to tears, Celine reflected on the iconic moment with a heartfelt message on X.

She wrote: ‘I’m honored to have performed tonight, for the Paris 2024 Opening Ceremony, and so full of joy to be back in one of my very favorite cities!

‘Most of all, I’m so happy to be celebrating these amazing athletes, with all their stories of sacrifice and determination, pain and perseverance.

  342. Do Greens and crossbenchers who claim that transparency and integrity
is at the heart of their reason for entering Parliament in the first place hear themselves?

In the past few days they have mounted self-serving arguments against proposed electoral reforms that the major parties look set to come together to support.

The reforms include caps for how much money wealthy individuals can donate,
caps on the amount candidates can spend in individual electorates to prevent the equivalent of an arms race, and a $90million limit on what any party can spend at an election – actually less than the major
    parties currently spend.

The proposed new laws also include lower disclosure thresholds for donations,
thus increasing the transparency of who makes political
    donations in the first place.

So the wealthy wont be able to hide behind anonymity while
using their cash to influence election outcomes – and the extent
to which they can use their wealth at all will be limited.

The bill will further improve transparency by also increasing
the speed and frequency that disclosures of donations need to be made.

At present we have the absurd situation in which donations get made
    – but you only find out the details of who has given what to whom many months later,
well after elections are won and lost.

In other words, what is broadly being proposed will result in much greater transparency and far less big money being injected into campaigning by the wealthy.

Teal Kylea Tink claimed the major parties were ‘running scared’ with the policy and
warned the reform would ‘not stop the rot’

Greens senate leader Larissa Waters (left) fired a warning shot
    – saying if it serves only the major parties ‘it’s a rort, not reform’. Teal independent ACT senator David Pocock (right) said:
‘What seems to be happening is a major-party stitch-up’

Anyone donating more than $1,000 to a political party, as opposed to $16,000 under
the current rules, will need to disclose having done so.
And how much they can donate will be capped.

Yet the Greens and Teals have quickly condemned the proposed new laws, labeling them a
‘stitch-up’, ‘outrageous’ and ‘a rort, not a reform’.

They have lost their collective minds after finding out that Labor’s proposal just might
secure the support of the opposition.

I had to double check who was criticising what exactly before even starting to write this column.

Because I had assumed – incorrectly – that these important transparency measures
stamping out the influence of the wealthy must have been proposed by the virtue-signalling Greens or the
corruption-fighting Teals, in a united crossbench effort to
drag the major parties closer to accountability.

    More fool me.

The bill, designed to clean up a rotten system, is being put
forward by Labor and is opposed by a growing cabal of crossbenchers.

It makes you wonder what they have to hide.
Put simply, the Greens and Teals doth protest too much on this
    issue.

Labor is thought to be trying to muscle out major political donors such
    as Clive Palmer

Another potential target of the laws is businessman and Teal funder Simon Holmes
    à Court

The Greens have taken massive donations in the past, contrary to their irregular calls to tighten donations rules (Greens leader Adam Bandt and Senator Mehreen Faruqi are pictured)

The major parties have long complained about the influence the likes of Simon Holmes à Court wields behind the scenes amongst the Teals.

And we know the Greens have taken massive donations from the wealthy in the past, contrary to their irregular calls to
    tighten donations rules.

Now that tangible change has been proposed, these bastions
of virtue are running a mile from reforms that will curtail dark art of
    political donations.

The Labor government isn’t even seeking for these
transparency rules to take effect immediately,
by the way. It won’t be some sort of quick-paced power play
before the next election designed to catch the crossbench out.

They are aiming for implementation by 2026, giving everyone enough time to absorb and understand the changes
    before preparing for them.

Don’t get me wrong, no deal has yet been done between Labor and
the Coalition. I imagine the opposition want to go over
the laws with a fine tooth comb.

As they should – because it certainly isn’t beyond Labor to include hidden one-party advantages in the proposed
design which would create loopholes only the unions are capable
of taking advantage of, therefore disadvantaging the Coalition electorally in the years to come.

But short of such baked-in trickiness scuttling a deal to get these proposed laws implemented,
the crossbench should offer their support, not cynical opposition, to what is being
    advocated for.

They might even be able to offer something worthwhile that could
    be incorporated in the package.

To not do so exposes their utter hypocrisy and blowhard false commentary
about being in politics to ‘clean things up’.

  345. Smile 2 – starring Naomi Scott, Lukas Gage and
Jack Nicholson’s son Ray – emerged as the winner after a horror movie box office showdown.

The fright flick eclipsed hot contender Terrifier 3 for
    the top spot.

The Smile sequel starring Scott, 31,  as a pop star who begins
experiencing terrifying and inexplicable events as she prepares for a
world tour, opened wide in more than 3,600 theaters, pulling in a payday of
    $23 million.

Ray, whose mom is Nicholson’s former partner Rebecca Broussard, shocked fans with an eerie
grin in the new movie, which was near-identical
to the Oscar-winner’s maniacal smile as Jack Torrance in the
1980 Stanley Kubrick classic, The Shining.

In a legendary scene, an insane Jack hacks at a bathroom door with an axe as his cowering wife Wendy (Shelley Duvall) screams inside.
As he busts a hole in the door, he sticks his face through, grins and exclaims: ‘Here’s
    Johnny!’ in an improvised line.

The original Smile, released in September 2022, and starring Sosie Bacon, was a sleeper hit, which
was well received and earned $217,408,513 globally.

Smile 2 has received a 83-percent critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an 83-percent Popcornmeter rating from audiences.

  351. Anthony Albanese has tried to claim his relationship with
Alan Joyce was a strictly professional one between a Prime
Minister and a corporate titan, as he battles claims the Qantas
boss was his ‘personal travel agent’ for free flights and upgrades.

However that characterization of the relationship was at odds with that made by Mr Joyce, who said he was ‘good mates’ with
Mr Albanese and had been ‘for years’.

In the wake of the explosive claims that the Prime Minister
had Mr Joyce arrange free tickets and upgrades,
Mr Albanese distanced himself from the Qantas chief.

When asked about about their relationship on Sunday Mr Albanese implied it was purely in a
professional capacity, having been Transport Minister and shadow
transport spokesperson before becoming Prime Minister.

‘He (Joyce) was the CEO of the national airline …
I had the same relationship with him that I have with John Borghetti as the
CEO of Virgin,’ Mr Albanese said.

That assessment was at odds with the many photos showing
Mr Albanese and Mr Joyce apparently greatly enjoying each other’s company.

Mr Albanese and Mr Joyce were pictured in high
spirits on the red carpet at the Qantas 100th Gala
    Dinner in March last year.

In photos from the event, Mr Joyce proudly walks the red carpet with one arm around the prime minister and the other around
    Mr Albanese’s partner, Jodie Haydon.

Just five months later, in August, a smiling Mr Albanese attended Qantas’s unveiling of
it’s special ‘Yes 23′ emblazoned airplanes for the Voice referendum.

Former Qantas CEO Alan Joyce jovially walked the red carpet
with one arm around the prime minister and the other around his partner, Jodie Haydon for a
    special anniversary event last year

Mr Joyce was seen touching Mr Albanese’s arm, with the PM bursting into laughter.

Even when Scott Morrison was PM,  Mr Joyce
enjoyed an apparently close relationship with Mr Albanese as the pair
stood close together at the launch of the Qantas’ landmark Perth
to London flight in March, 2018.

During a Senate hearing in September 2023, Mr Joyce said he had been ‘friends for years’ with Mr Albanese.

Asked about why he gifted Mr Albanese’s son Nathan a membership
to the prestigious and exclusive Chairman’s Lounge Mr Joyce refused to
confirm or deny but talked up his relationship with the Prime Minister.

‘I’ve been good mates with Albo for some time,’ Mr Joyce said.

However, the then Qantas CEO refused to say whether he lobbied
the Prime Minister on the controversial decision to lock
competitor Qatar Airways out of domestic routes.

It has since emerged in a new book about Qantas, The Chairman’s
Lounge, by former Australian Financial Review columnist Joe
Aston that Ms Haydon is also a Chairman’s Lounge member.

Mr Albanese and Mr Joyce also appeared to greatly enjoying each other’s company at  a Qantas event in August last year

Anthony Albanese fires up and launches a brutal personal
    attack on book author

Reports have emerged in a new book Mr Albanese received 22 upgrades from economy from Qantas and
he would liaise personally with the former airline boss for them.

Aston also alleged Mr Albanese directly contacted Mr
Joyce while in his various parliamentary jobs to ask for
special upgrades for himself or his family.

According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’ 11 of the 22 flights Mr Albanese received upgrades for were ‘privately funded’ and included overseas trips to Rome, London,
Los Angeles and Honolulu, with some being for holidays.

Mr Albanese insisted on Tuesday that the London flights was for work purposes and
all were ‘declared in the appropriate way’.

Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has leapt on the accusations describing Mr Albanese as being the ‘best friend’ of Mr Joyce.

Mr Dutton told Sky News on Monday night it was ‘strange’ Mr Albanese had
directly contacted Mr Joyce to request upgrades
while holding a regulatory position in the transport sector.

‘If you’re the Transport Minister and you’re
picking up the phone to one of the most important stakeholders in the portfolio
asking for a free upgrade, then again, I think the Prime Minister would be able
to answer those questions more effectively than anyone else because
I’m not aware of anyone else having done it,’ Mr Dutton said.

It has since emerged that Ms Haydon also has membership of the Qantas
    Chairman’s Lounge

The Prime Minister denied frequently asking Mr Joyce for upgrades on Tuesday at press conference in the NSW city of
    Newcastle.

‘The only discussions that I can recall with Alan Joyce certainly were not discussed through calls – we
discussed the first flight from Australia to Dubai on the A380,’ he said.

‘I’ve declared everything in accordance with all of the rules.’

Aston was asked on Monday night by ABC interviewer Sarah Ferguson about how confident
he was that Mr Albanese had made calls personally to Mr
    Joyce for upgrades.

‘I am very comfortable with my sourcing,’ Aston said.

Asked whether he thought Mr Albanese had been influenced by Mr Joyce’s lobbying to block UAE
airline Qatar domestically Aston said it was ‘implausible’ to think that the Prime Minister’s
office had nothing to do with the decision.

Mr Albanese’s son Nathan, 24, has reportedly also been granted access to
the Qantas Chairman’s Lounge (pictured, Mr Albanese and son Nathan in May,
    2022)

‘It’s very hard to imagine a decision of any political sensitivity in the Albanese government that
would not go through the Prime Minister’s office,
    ‘ Aston replied.

He noted the opening up of the Australian domestic market Qatar had seemingly been sailing through with Transport Minister Catherine King speaking warmly
about the proposal until ‘everything changed’ to stop it dead in tracks.

Ms King repeatedly denied in parliament the decision to block Qatar was due to Qantas lobbying her or any Labor colleagues.

Despite Mr Albanese claiming he declared every upgrade received from Qantas
the Australian Financial Review reported on Tuesday that he failed to do for his former
wife Carmel Tebbutt when the two traveled together.

Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has  questioned the alleged personal requests Mr Albanese made to
Mr Joyce  while in his various parliamentary jobs

Even when Scott Morrison was prime minister, Mr Joyce appeared
to have a close relationship with Mr Albanese (the pair are pictured at
    an event in 2019)

Sky New host Sharri Markson on Monday night labeled Mr
Joyce as ‘basically Albanese’s personal travel agent.’

‘This is all a question of integrity. Most Australians struggle
to afford even an economy airfare. They’d never be able to afford the luxury
of business class. It’s out of our reach,’ she said.

‘Can Albanese truly be impartial when it comes to making decisions about Qantas when he’s been getting tens of thousands of dollars worth of free upgrades to business class?
The revelations puts the decision he made
as transport minister and prime minister under a cloud.

‘Aside from the integrity issues, this revelation is also politically lethal.
Albanese took care to curate a self-image of a housing commission boy who
made it. But now the perception is cementing of a long-term pollie enjoying the perks of public office.’

Another awkward paradox of Mr Albanese’s  apparent close relationship with Mr Joyce is that the Labor leader in a trade unionist advocate while Qantas attempted to break the power
of the Transport Workers Union by sacking 1700 staff during Covid.

The sacking has since been ruled illegal by Federal
Court in a case brought by the union with Qantas facing possible hundreds of thousands
    in compensation payouts.

The friendship however did find one perhaps unlikely defender in semi-retired 3AW radio star Neil Mitchell.

‘Quick test: upgrade Albo is a bad look,’ Mitchell wrote on X.

‘But does anybody believe he was seriously compromised by
having Alan Joyce as a bestie? Time to rewrite rules governing politicians.’

  352. An invitation to lunch at Caviar Kaspia was, once upon a time, an offer you simply didn’t refuse.
Providing, of course, that the bill was on someone else.
Because caviar, smeared on blinis or piled high on baked potatoes, sure didn’t come cheap.
There may have been other things on the menu,
but no one paid them much heed. This was all about lashings of the black stuff.

Caviar Kaspia’s signature baked potato and caviar: ‘there are
few better dishes on earth…only the price, at just under £150, is ridiculous’

Caviar Kaspia popped her final tin about two decades back.
And that site, hidden down a smart Mayfair mews, was taken over by Gavin Rankin (who used to be the boss), and transformed into the brilliant Bellamy’s.

It prospers to this day. Kaspia, on the other hand,
went quiet. Until last year, when she reopened
as a members’ club in another Mayfair backstreet. But a £2,000
a year membership fee proved hard to swallow, meaning the doors were opened to the great unwashed.

Which is how we find ourselves sitting in a rather handsome – albeit near empty – dining room, lusciously lavish,
under the stern gaze of a stern painting of a very stern man. The soft,
crepuscular gloom is broken up by the glare of table lamps,
indecorously bright, while a loud soundtrack of indolent, indeterminate beats throbs in the background.
The whole place is scented with gilded ennui.

Our fellow diners are two young South Korean women of pale, luminescent
beauty, clad in diaphanous couture. They don’t speak, rather communicate entirely via camera phone.
Pose, click, check, filter, post. Immaculate waiters hover in the shadows.

We sip ice-cold vodka, and eat a £77 caviar and smoked-salmon Kaspia croque monsieur that
tastes far better than it ought to. Next door, a large
table fills with a glut of the noisily, glossily confident.

We’re looked after by a wonderful French lady of such effervescent charm
and charisma that had she burst into an impromptu performance of ‘Willkommen’, we would have barely blinked.
Baked potatoes, skin as crisp as parchment, insides whipped savagely hard with
butter and sour cream, are a study in tuber art. A cool
jet-black splodge of oscietra caviar, gently saline, raises them to the sublime.

Only the price, at just under £150 each, is ridiculous.
But there are few better dishes on earth. I’d eat this every
day if I could. But I can’t. Obviously. That’s the problem with caviar.
    One taste is never enough.

Lady Gaga fans beg her to do a global tour as singer prepares to release her seventh album

Meanwhile, it was recently claimed that Gaga has decided to delay her world tour

Due to huge names, including Oasis and Coldplay, booking up multiple dates at stadiums across
the UK, there are said to be no spaces available for
Gaga – whose last tour was the Chromatica Ball in 2022 –

An insider told The Sun newspaper’s Bizarre column: ‘Lady Gaga is planning

‘She sold out two nights at London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium during her 20-date Chromatica Ball tour in 2022 and the demand was so huge,
she wants to push the boat out even more this time.

‘Her next album will be out in the new year and she hoped to spend much of the
    summer on tour.

‘But acts like Oasis and Coldplay have thwarted it.
She has been told there’s no room at the inn,
so she will have to make do with touring in 2026 instead.

  354. Hamas’ leader Yahya Sinwar could have given an order to execute all the hostages who
remain in Gaza if he died, a top Israeli negotiator has
    claimed.

Sinwar died on Wednesday after the IDF encountered him by chance, sending
a drone to kill the terror leader.

Gershon Baskin, the Israeli negotiator who oversaw Sinwar’s 2011
release from an Israeli prison, along with 1,026 Palestinian prisoners, in exchange
for the return of kidnapped soldier Gilad Shilat, said that his death was
a ‘moment of either opportunity or a moment of doom.’

‘A moment of doom because there are rumours that Sinwar
instructed people holding hostages that, should he
be killed, they should kill their hostages,’ he told the Telegraph.

At the time of Sinwar’s death, just over 100 hostages remained in Gaza, with 60 thought to
    still be alive.

Those who remain alive are at risk of never being returned to
their families, according Haaretz, which reported on Sunday that top US officials, including Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, have assessed there is
a slim chance of a deal being brokered, given the tensions between Israel and Hamas.

Sinwar (pictured) died on Wednesday after the IDF encountered him by chance, sending a drone to kill
    the terror leader

Protesters attend a demonstration against Israeli Prime
Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government and demand a deal to release all hostages held in Gaza, during the Israel-Hamas conflict, near Netanyahu’s private residence in Jerusalem June 20

People protest against the government, to demand a ceasefire deal and the immediate release of
hostages kidnapped during the deadly October 7, 2023 attack by Hamas, in Tel Aviv, Israel

A senior Israeli official told the newspaper on Sunday, several days
after Sinwar’s passing: ‘There are currently no serious
cease-fire talks, and Blinken is fully aware of this.’

They added: ‘It’s unclear how Sinwar’s death will impact any potential negotiations, if they even exist at this stage.’

While Baskin told the Telegraph that it wasn’t possible to confirm whether Sinwar had a kill order
on the hostages, he said the rumours ought to be taken seriously, given how little Hamas appears to care
    for them.

He cited the horrific killing of six hostages in tunnels under Rafah in late
    August.

Israeli military spokesman Daniel Hagari said the six were ‘cruelly murdered by Hamas just a short time before we
    got to them.’

The six dead hostages were identified as Eden Yerushalmi,
24, Carmel Gat, 39, Almog Sarusi, 26, Alex Lubnov, 26, Ori
    Danino, 25, and Hersh Goldberg-Polin, 23.

Five of those who were recovered had been attending the Nova music festival when Hamas terrorists began slaughtering festivalgoers, while taking others hostage.

Gat was at her family kibbutz when she was captured.

The time on the clock by the end of the footage is 1.32am,
just five hours before the first terrorists were spotted breaching into Israeli territory

This is the moment Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar’s wife
is spotted seemingly holding a $32,000 bag in the tunnel leading to his secret lair

Footage of his wife seems to show her entering the tunnel to the lair,
carrying a Birkin bag, the day before the horrendous tragedy.
She is seen appearing to smile at the camera

People pass by a newly painted graffiti depicting Hamas
Leader Yahya Sinwar, days after he was killed by Israeli forces in Gaza, in Tel Aviv,
Israel, on Sunday, Oct. 20, 2024

Goldberg-Polin lost his arm when a grenade exploded during the carnage.

‘We saw the six hostages killed when Israel was entering the tunnel.

That could be the case now. We just don’t know,’ Baskin said.

US probing ‘leaked Israeli documents’ which ‘indicate Britain’s involvement in a deadly plot’

He said the return of the hostages depended entirely on whether Israel
is able to make a deal with Hamas.

‘It’s a moment of opportunity where Israel should be issuing a very
clear call that anyone who’s holding a hostage that releases them will be given free passage for themselves and
their family out of Gaza to another country, as well as
    a lot of money.

‘In order to encourage them to do that, Israel should
also be reaching out to Egypt and Qatar and tell them to renew the
negotiations quickly, not on the deal that’s been negotiated without success for
almost four months, but on a deal that would bring the hostages home quicker and would obviously require Israel to end the
    war.’

He said a deal would likely mean the release of Palestinian prisoners, a controversial point for many Israelis who believe that their release would simply lead to another
October 7-style attack in the future.

A Yemeni man looks at an artwork depicting the Hamas’ Political Bureau Head Yahya Sinwar

Sinwar’s lair, discovered by Israeli soldiers in the Tel al-Sultan area,
was well-resourced, with food, water and other supplies to help him survive for months underground

These are the disquieting images that show Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar was callously hiding
out in relative comfort from his underground lair as he ordered
his terror group to carry out the bloodiest massacre Israel
    has ever endured

But Baskin said it was a mistake to think like this: ‘October 7 wasn’t because of
Sinwar. [It] was because we’re occupying another people for
56 years without enabling them to ever believe that they’re going to be free,
or locking two million people in Gaza under poverty and telling them that they’ll never
    be able to leave Gaza.’

policies, vis-à-vis the Palestinians, on military force’.

‘For Palestinians, the lessons learned must, first and foremost, be that there should no longer be an armed
struggle as part of their liberation strategy.

‘Right or wrong, the armed struggle primarily brings death and destruction.’

He added: ‘Every person living between the river and the sea must have the same right to the same rights.

‘From that principle, we can move forward. Freedom, self-determination, security, and dignity for all.’

  364. Lady Gaga is ‘disappointed’ at the immense flood of
negative reactions to Joker: Folie à Deux, with the singer’s
team now keen to quickly push out other projects to help distract from the furor over the film, insiders claim.

Todd Phillips‘ sequel was officially released in theaters on October 4, but despite expectations, it bombed, raking
in just under $40 million at the domestic box office, and receiving the lowest CinemaScore in comic book movie history.

Gaga, 38, is reportedly confused at the lack of love for her turn as Harleen Lee Quinzel, aka Harley Quinn, alongside Joaquin Phoenix, 49, as the
Joker – a role that won him the best actor Oscar in 2019 – in the wake of the standing ovation it received at the Venice Film
    Festival last month.

‘Gaga is surprised by the response to Joker 2 and is shocked
that people don’t love it after the response it received from critics before it premiered,’
    a source exclusively told DailyMail.com.

‘She put so much heart into the movie and has so much respect for the
    DC comics fan base.’

Lady Gaga is ‘disappointed’ at the immense flood of negative reactions to Joker: Folie à Deux

They added: ‘Her team is quietly looking at other projects they can roll out as
they want to move on this from as quickly as possible.’

But despite the lackluster reception from
fans, a second source claimed she is not letting it deter
her from returning to the big screen, with the singer said to
be eyeing up a Quentin Tarantino movie.

‘She is disappointed that Joker is pretty much a bomb,’ they said.

‘She thought that this film could get her an Oscar nomination, especially since
the first film was such a success and Joaquin won an Oscar.

‘She would now like to land a role in Quentin Tarantino’s next and final film.
Nobody knows what that is going to be, but she
    wants to audition.

‘She’s going to lobby hard to get a meeting with him once a script is presented, it is a bucket list moment for her to be involved.’

Tarantino was set to create The Movie Critic which would have been his tenth and
final film, but on April 17, sources told The Hollywood Reporter that the project was canceled.

The famed director is now believed to be working
up a new project to mark his final cinematic release.

The singer’s team is now keen to push out other projects to help distract from the
    backlash, insiders have told DailyMail.com

Joker: Folie à Deux has flopped at the box office, with the
psychological musical thriller also landing the lowest CinemaScore for a comic book movie

Gaga, real name is Stefani Germanotta, is hoping the Joker 2 flop will just be a
small blip in her career, after the film received a D rating on CinemaScore — the lowest score for a comic book movie.

Madame Web — which notably also flopped in theaters earlier this year and
also received terrible reviews — holds the higher score of C+.

Joker notably opened with $96.2 million on its theater
release in 2019 and eventually took a little over $1 billion in the global
    box office.

The first movie – which was also directed by Phillips – had a budget of between $55 and $70 million. However, the budget more than doubled to
around $200 million for Folie À Deux.

The sequel screened during the Venice International
Film Festival last month, where it earned a 12-minute standing ovation, per Deadline.

It had been projected to bring in around $70 million – but the number drastically dropped amid
    mixed reviews before release.

Audiences have since shared their opinions on the sequel, which features multiple musical sequences.

‘Joaquin Phoenix don’t deserve this,’ wrote one on X.
    ‘What happened to the script?’

Another user added: ‘Stop making sequels as musicals if
    the original wasn’t a musical.’

An insider told DailyMail.com: ‘Gaga is surprised by the response to Joker 2 and is shocked that people don’t love it after the response it received from critics before it
    premiered’

‘Joker downfall really needs to be studied,’ shared a third, along with a monkey staring out a window.

One fan branded it ‘bad,’ adding:’ It was pretentious and dull.
Has the aesthetic of an arthouse film without the substance.

‘It also insults the audience’s intelligence.
the songs were also underwhelming too. They shouldn’t have let this escape to theaters.’

Another said: ‘The audience that loved the first movie is not the same
audience running to see musicals. This was a gigantic mistake from step 1.’

Many social media users have also slammed the movie’s final scene, which saw Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck brutally stabbed to death by a fellow inmate who could in fact by the real Joker.

But others did jump in in defense of the film, with one hailing it ‘amazing.’

‘100% as divisive as people are making it out to be,
‘ they continued. ‘I love that the film didn’t try to be a traditional sequel,
and fully committed to the storytelling they presented.
It never deviated to be a film full of Easter eggs or any other crowd pleasing aspects.’

Another user said: ‘I kinda loved Joker 2. I loved how it was structured as a meta-exploration of the first film’s
fandom and the musical elements were a lot of fun.’

Another source explained: ‘Gaga thought that this film could
get her an Oscar nomination’ (pictured director Todd Phillips, Gaga and
    Phoenix in September)

The insider explained: ‘She would now like to land a role in Quentin Tarantino’s
    next and final film’

One user claimed the film is ‘getting universal hate despite being more
interesting and creative than anything marvel has done in years is expected.’

‘Joker 2 is genuinely such a clever movie which carries the character study format of
the first movie into the second in a way which, surprisingly, will
floor you by the end,’ declared another. ‘I’m astounded reception is this bad because this is SUCH
    a clever movie.’

A video of Gaga and Phoenix’s awkward reaction to being asked if Folie à Deux was ‘everything they expected’ went viral amid the
    backlash.

For a few seconds, the two stars sat in silence as they both waited for the other to answer the question.

‘Tell them how you feel, Joaquin,’ Gaga said to her costar as she held out a fake
    microphone in front of him.

‘It’s so hard to talk about but I think we feel like we achieved what we set out to do,’ he replied.

Qantas on taxpayer-funded trips, despite Virgin offering cheaper tickets.

Federal MPs flew with the national carrier for 80 per cent of work trips last year despite it not always being the cheapest route,
according to travel data provided to the government.

While politicians and their staffers are required to book the
cheapest flight, it also has to be the most efficient, with Qantas offering the most routes between major cities.

MPs are banned from accruing frequent flyer points on taxpayer-funded trips like ordinary Aussies
can, but they can can receive lifetime status credits, which allows access to airport
    lounges and flight upgrades.

‘How else can one explain the extraordinary
dominance of Qantas in securing bookings by parliamentarians and their staff?’ Myriam Robin wrote in an opinion piece for
    the Australian Financial Review.

‘There’s nothing like accruing status credits on someone else’s dime.’

Transport Minister Catherine King has since committed to a review of flight bookings by government
officials which will be conducted by the Department of Finance this year, despite there being just two months left
    of 2024.

Politicians’ preference for Qantas may also be put down to the airline’s exclusive invite-only ‘Chairman’s Lounge’.

The Flying Kanga-RORT – why you’re footing the bill as airlines wine and dine pollies in VIP club

Daily Mail Australia in August revealed that nearly
every single federal politician in the country has accepted free
    membership of the club.

Qantas and the Albanese government have both denied the airline enjoys any
disproportionate level of influence over the country’s political classes.

A Daily Mail Australia audit of the members’ interest registers – in both the House
of Representatives and the Senate – revealed almost 93 per cent of the nation’s leaders have been ‘gifted’
membership to the lavish, all-inclusive lounge.

The high profile ranks of government giftees include
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese as well as every member of his 22-person Cabinet,
his seven-person Outer Ministry and all 12 assistant ministers.

While most politicians declared their Qantas’ privileges as a ‘gift’, Labor MP Marion Scrymgour listed her membership as her ‘Chairman Lounge entitlement’.

Daily Mail Australia in August revealed that nearly every single federal politician in the
country has accepted free membership of Qantas’ exclusive Chairman’s
    Lounge.

And it’s not just politicians on the take, with more than 60 MPs – including Marles, Chalmers, King, Bill Shorten, Zali Steggall and Tanya
Plibersek – disclosing their spouses have also been granted
unfettered, independent access to Qantas’ luxurious members only lounge.

Often touted as ‘the most exclusive club in the country’, membership to the Chairman’s Lounge has long been veiled in secrecy.

Even the entrances to each of the country’s six opulent VIP clubs – in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Canberra and Perth airports – are suitably discreet.

Though, once inside, the designer lounges are immediately more ostentatious, with
free à la carte fine dining, table service, a decadent selection of wines
and Champagne and a discreet army of dedicated lounge attendants.

Membership to the club is ‘priceless’ – it cannot be bought for any amount of money nor obtained via any amount of frequent flyers points.

Instead, each member is hand-picked and approved by the company’s chief
    executive and chairman.

  373. Kamala Harris and Donald Trump are asking voter to choose between an immigration crackdown and reproductive rights

As their race for the US presidency comes down to the wire, each major candidate has leaned heavily on a
favorite theme — abortion rights for Democrat Kamala Harris
and border security for Republican Donald Trump.

In Arizona, their ideological duel has reached a white-hot peak, with both topics the subject of fiercely debated ballot
    referendums.

And in this key southwestern state — where the billionaire Trump lost to President Joe Biden in 2020 by a tiny margin of about
10,500 votes — every ballot truly will count.

In the mid-sized city of Tucson, hundreds of volunteers
in orange T-shirts were going door-to-door to try to persuade voters to back a ballot measure to inscribe abortion rights in the state
constitution — and, while they’re at it, to vote for Vice President Harris.

To Grace Ireland, a 26-year-old activist, the abortion restrictions imposed by several Republican-controlled states amount
to “a public health crisis that Donald Trump and the Republicans have created.”

She added, “Democrats and Kamala Harris are trying to push us forward and protect women’s health care and protect our democracy and protect all people.”

Une pancarte barrée du slogan “L’indifférence aux élections est dangereuse”, à Tucson, en Arizona, le
    16 octobre 2024

Since 2022, when the US Supreme Court ended the constitutional protection of federal abortion rights,
Ireland, a registered nurse, has worked in several states where abortion is banned or severely
    limited.

Those restrictions have had sometimes disastrous consequences
for women having problem pregnancies or carrying nonviable fetuses when doctors refuse to treat them.

“Women are going septic and dying because they cannot receive the care that they need,” she told
    AFP.

    – ‘Abortion is murder’ –

As Ireland carries her message to potential voters, she
noted, particularly to young people who may be less likely to vote, that
it was Donald Trump who appointed the three justices who tipped the Supreme
    Court against abortion rights.

Donald Trump lors d’un meeting à Tempe, en Arizona, le 24
    octobre 2024

“It’s important to reiterate that Donald Trump and these abortion bans are one and the same,” Ireland said.

But in Tucson there is little unanimity among young voters.

“I do think that abortion is murder,” said Pedro
    Lopez, a 20-year-old college student.

“There are cases of incest or rape” that merit exceptions,
he conceded, “but that’s very small.”

He also worries about the flow of undocumented migrants that have entered the
country from Mexico during the Biden-Harris administration.

“People that are entering the United States illegally… should be sent back to where they came from,” he
    said.

“My grandparents migrated from Mexico to the United States, and they did it the right way.”

So he plans not only to vote for Trump, but to back the
proposal to let local law enforcement detain, arrest and
prosecute anyone suspected of having entered the
country illegally — powers normally reserved to the border police who work for the federal government.

“I know people that work for the Border Patrol, and they’re really upset because this current administration has really tied their hands up. They’re not really able to do anything,” Lopez said.

    – Mixed impact –

The major political parties see the competing referendums as
offering an opportunity to mobilize more people to vote — on ballot questions at
the very heart of the two presidential campaigns.

Anti-abortion activists demonstrate outside a clinic in Phoenix, Arizona on April 18,
    2024

But the referendums may not have the clear impact on the race for the White House that activists hope.

Polls show Trump and Harris running neck-and-neck in Arizona, with the Republican holding a very narrow lead.

Both ballot questions, meantime, have drawn strong support and both appear likely to pass.

So the abortion issue may not be “helping Democrats in the way that they would hope,”
said Jenny Brian, a professor of bioethics at Arizona State University.

Many Republican women will vote both to protect abortion rights and to bring Trump back to the White House,
    Brian said.

Though abortion is sometimes framed as a Democrat vs.
Republican issue, the Republican Party includes “a broad spectrum of views on the topic,” an issue that also raises
conservatives’ concerns about “government interference,” she
    added.

The same dynamic applies to immigration, with the tougher language on the Arizona ballot question finding support not
just among Trump Republicans but also “moderates and even many Democrats,” said John Kavanagh,
a Republican and an Arizona state senator.

The 74-year-old Kavanagh is unimpressed by Harris’s recent toughening on migration, specifically
her promise to maintain the partial closing of the border Biden ordered in recent months.

The vice president, Kavanagh said, is “running away faster from her open-border policy than an illegal immigrant that runs away from the Border Patrol.”

Rubies are often referred to as the ‘king of gemstones’
and their vibrant color – caused by the presence of chromium – is often associated with passion, love, and power.

The name ‘ruby’ comes from the Latin word ‘ruber’ which means red.

Rubies are incredibly sought after for their beauty
and durability, they are ranked 9 on the Mohs scale of hardness (qualitative
scale that measures the relative hardness of minerals and other materials by
their resistance to scratching), second to diamonds.

Beyond their sparkle and strength, they have held cultural significance for
    centuries.

Throughout history, rubies have been associated with nobility and wealth, often adorning the crowns of kings
and queens. They are also believed to bring good fortune and protection to their wearer.

According to Melee the Show founders Lauren Wolf
and Rebecca Overmann, ruby jewelry is on the rise.

The fine jewelry trade show connects buyers and designers, with the next shows taking place in New York (February 1-3) and Tucson (February 5-7).

‘From bold gemstones to intricate craftsmanship, our designers bring rubies to life in ways that inspire and captivate,’
    said the duo.

Anthony Lent, Fannie Thomas, Heather Guidero, Jake Matluck, Amali, Karin Jacobson, Marian Maurer and Ciara Bowles are some of the exhibiting
    designers who work with rubies.

  376. Adam Bandt said people ‘can make their own judgment’
about him enjoying an exclusive and discretionary perk from Qantas during a tense exchange with a
    journalist live on radio.

The Greens leader has been outed as a member of the Qantas Chairman’s Lounge, an invitation-only
set of catered waiting areas and services handed
out by the airline in what has been called ‘Australia’s most exclusive club’.

Mr Bandt was challenged on Monday by ABC Radio National stand-in host Steve Cannane that he was ‘enjoying free hospitality from a company
that has illegally sacked hundreds of workers’.

Mr Bandt replied: ‘And I’ll declare that and people can make their own judgement about
    what they think about that.’

Cannane was referring to the Federal Court’s ruling that Qantas illegally sacked 1,700 workers at the start of
the Covid pandemic in a case brought by Transport Workers Union.

Commenting on the sacking in June of 2020, Mr Bandt called it a ‘devastating day for thousands
of Qantas workers & their families’ in a Facebook post.

‘We’re thinking of you,’ he wrote.

Cannane challenged Mr Bandt further saying: ‘You don’t think you should be a
little purer on this and just not take their (Qantas’s) hospitality?’

Mr Bandt said he always made declarations about matters such as this and argued that the
party’s policies to tax big corporations heavily show the perks
    were not impacting the Greens.

How Greens leader Adam Bandt spent thousands on private jet flights while lecturing YOU about climate change

Mr Bandt was spotted in September flying business class from Melbourne to Canberra
seated next to Senator Jacqui Lambie.

Albanese government ministers Tim Watts and Catherine King were on the same flight but were with the
    masses in economy class.

It has been previously reported that Mr Bandt opts
to frequently fly business despite his party’s
core policy of cutting C02 emissions.

Flying business class emits about three times as much carbon as economy class because the seats take
up more room and more of them are empty, according to a World Bank study.

Fellow Greens MP Max Chandler-Mather last year said he had
shunned a Chairman’s Lounge membership and refuses to travel
    business class.

Earlier this year Mr Bandt’s flying habits led to controversy.

Mr Bandt’s flying habits have been a previous source of controversy after
it was revealed he frequently opts for business class and has even taken private jets
    to election events

Mr Bandt used two private jets during the 2022 federal election campaign, landing tax payers with the $23,000 bill.

One flight was between Queensland regional centres Townsville and Rockhampton on March 7 but he also boarded a $15,000 private plane along the well-travelled Brisbane to Canberra route to attend his party’s election campaign launch.

Mr Bandt isn’t the only politician in the hot seat with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese being asked if
he has included both his son and partner as ‘plus one’ Chairman’s Club members.

He is also being asked about free flight upgrades including an international one he is alleged to have received from Qantas
in new book The Chairman’s Lounge authored by former Australian Financial Review
    columnist Joe Aston.

The Greens are licking their electoral wounds after the Queensland state poll, where they are battling to hold onto their two seats after stating
they aimed to triple their representation in parliament.

With 72 per cent of the vote counted they appear to have retained
the Brisbane seat of Maiwar but suffered a 4.6 per cent swing to the
    ALP.

However, they remain behind South Brisbane, which has seen a massive 12.4 per
cent swing to Labor with 64 per cent of votes counted.

WHAT IS THE QANTAS CHAIRMAN’S CLUB?

The Qantas Chairman’s Lounge is an invitation-only club
approved by the company chairman, with the guest list a closely-guarded secret.

It has been dubbed ‘the most exclusive club in the country’ and comes
    with a distinct black card.

Members include senior-ranking MPs including ministers, state premiers and the Prime Minister, leaders of
major unions and sporting groups, Qantas ambassadors,
selected A-list celebrities, major corporate figures and high-profile media
    personalities.

The clubs can be found in Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Brisbane,
Perth and Adelaide but are not signed, you have to know where to look.

Inside you will find expensive wood and brass furnishings, wool carpet
and marble flooring all bathed in natural light.

Members enjoy fine à la carte dining with a complimentary premium array of
beers, spirits and Australian wines. Wine bottles are often given as departing gift

Facilities may also include spas, showers and an assortment of
    books and magazines.

Members may bring in two guests at a time.

Lounge attendants personally alert you when your flight is to board
and your personal preferences are logged for each flight.
Membership also entitles you to first-class facilities at Qantas partner airlines.

  386. LONDON, Sept 28 (Reuters) – Philip Morris International (PMI) on Thursday signalled a slower than anticipated
U.S. roll out of its IQOS heated tobacco device, a choice
analysts said was positive for its competitors in the short
    term.

The New York-listed Marlboro maker also said it aims for more
than two thirds of its net revenues to come from “smoke-free” products by 2030, up from 50% in 2025, as it tries to transform its
image from a cigarette purveyor to a driver of the shift to healthier alternatives.

Investors have been closely watching IQOS’ entry into the U.S.,
the world’s largest market for nicotine products, and had been expecting it from May
2024 next year. Reuters reported on Wednesday that PMI
is hiring lobbyists across a host of key U.S. states ahead of the launch.

Chief Executive Jacek Olczak said IQOS would launch in four cities
in two unnamed U.S. states from 2024, but a national launch would only come after PMI receives approval to sell the latest version,
    known as IQOS ILUMA.

The company was planning to apply for approval in October and
expected it from 2025, he continued.

“We need to warm up the tyres,” he said of the initial launch,
which would help PMI fine tune its approach.

A national roll-out of ILUMA would follow but in phases, he continued,
adding launching in 10 states in the first year would make sense.

Meaningful traction for PMI’s heated tobacco products in the U.S.
“now looks delayed until ILUMA,” Owen Bennett, equity analyst at Jefferies, said in a
note, adding this was a positive for PMI’s rivals.

Olczak also signalled that PMI’s push into non-nicotine products was no longer a priority.
It recently scrapped an ambition for $1 billion in net revenues to come from sales
    of such products by 2025.

Instead, PMI will focus its resources on IQOS and nicotine
pouch brand ZYN, Olczak said, adding it had been too optimistic around acceptance of
big tobacco companies operating outside of nicotine.

PMI also announced updated medium-term targets including for revenue and earnings per share,
and ambitious volume targets for IQOS and ZYN.

ZYN and other oral nicotine products in the U.S. would help drive an expected $2 billion in revenues
there in 2024, even before IQOS ILUMA, executives
    said.

PMI shares were up 1.5% on Thursday. (Reporting by

and remains the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time.

The second instalment finds Arthur Fleck institutionalised at Arkham awaiting trial for his
    crimes as Joker.

‘While struggling with his dual identity, Arthur not only stumbles upon true love, but
also finds the music that’s always been inside him,’
    a press release shared.

The last time that Joaquin played The Joker, Arthur Fleck, he had to drop
three and a half stone. He went on a diet of
    lettuce, asparagus and apples.

Five years later he has returned to the Oscar-winning role again in – and
says that he had to lose almost the same amount
of weight once more, and is never doing it again.

Speaking at the Venice Film Festival he said: ‘I’m
not going to talk through specifics of the diet, because I just think nobody wants
    to hear that.

‘But this time, it felt a bit more complicated just because there was so much dance rehearsal
that we were doing, which I didn’t have last time.

‘It felt a bit more difficult, but it is safe.
    But you’re right, I’m now 49, I probably shouldn’t do
this again. This is probably it for me.’

The actor, 49, wore a smart black tuxedo with a white
shirt, bow tie and a pair of sunglasses for the hotly-anticipated event

Folie à Deux will see Joaquin reprise his role as Arthur Fleck AKA Joker and is set for release on October 4 (pictured with Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn)

He added: ‘I know I was responsible last time for talking about
it, but it’s difficult to do so.

‘That becomes your obsession because you’re working the entire time to
    get to a certain weight.

‘So then you end up talking about it, and then it just sounds like
an actor going on and on about how much weight they lost.

‘By the end of that run I was so sick of myself
and angry at myself for making such a big deal about that part, because you just do what you’re ****ing supposed to do.
So this time I was like, ‘I’m not going
    to do that’.’
